Are bicycle handlebar grips a standard size?

We get asked this question a lot. For the most part handlebar diameters are the same across a lot of modern bikes. The grips you see listed in our warehouse without an indication of the diameter are made to suit this standard. The standard handlebar diameter is 22.2mm or 7/8″.

There are of course exceptions to this rule – and to all standards in bikes! Some vintage bikes will not adhere to the standard handlebar diameter, and while a ‘close enough’ fit seems good enough, its important to have a proper fit. Without a proper fit the locking mechanism on the grip will not secure the grip.

Upgrading your handlebar grips & not sure what to look for?

Fresh rubber on your handlebars will always be an improvement you your experience on your bike. Replacing worn, perishing & sticky rubber grips can make a world of difference to your enjoyment of riding your bike!

Always consider a ‘lock-on’ grip style, to reduce the likelihood that stretching from normal use of your grips does not make them loose. A proper fit on your grips is extremely important for safety reasons. You should have a stable & reliable surface for your hand to grip when braking!

Anatomical-fit or ergonomic fit handlebar grips are also a fantastic choice for your bike if you are experiencing discomfort in the hands when cycling. Hand pain can come from worn grips or just the nature of gripping a round tube shape for a time. Ergonomic style handlebar grips give you a wide platform to res the heel of your palm on, reducing hand fatigue.

Anatomical and ergonomic handlebars often come with ‘bar ends’ as well. This is a piece of the grip which stands at an angle to the rest of the grip. This is designed to give you more hand positions when cycling for extended periods of time. This means your hands experience less fatigue from staying in the same position on the bars. These bar end grips have the added benefit of giving you more maneuverability when manipulating your bars.
