Baskets
Swap out that milk crate for a basket! We stock a wide range of bike baskets; handlebar mounted baskets, front rack baskets & rear rack mounting baskets too.
Bike baskets are a great accessory for a commuter bike or a kids bike. Being able to carry your clothes, your work gear or even your dog on your bike is super handy! If you aren’t ready to commit to full touring cyclist pannier bags then the basket is a great solution.
Need to check if the basket will work before you commit? If you are local to Melbourne you can order online as a Click & Collect from our Abbotsford Cycles bicycle repair shop & bring your bike in for us to try it on for size.
Different types of bike baskets
As a broad overview, you will find on our website baskets designed for the front of your bike on your handlebars, and baskets designed to sit on a rear rack.
And then the differences are mostly in shape & size and how ‘open’ the wire mesh or wire lattice is.
So if you have a flat-bar bike (one that has flat handlebars rather than drop bars like on a road bike) then you can find a front basket to hang on there. There are mounts which use your fork crown to secure them. But there are also front baskets that simply hook over your bars and are easily lifted off. These are great for casual commuters or on a ‘town bike’. They’re good for dropping your wallet or small bag into when you don’t want to carry it on your back.
They’re also great for kids bikes for them to carry their own toys on their bike ride.
Rear baskets are bigger capacity, and assume you will be mounting them to a rear rack. We sell rear racks too, and it can be a little tricky to work out which rack suits your bike. So if you are starting from scratch maybe give us a call or send a message and we can point you in the right direction.
Rear baskets will often have sloped sides which are designed to slope towards your seat post. This is to keep the basket out the way of your saddle. Because you might have a quite low saddle height, so your basket won’t interfere with it.
A lot of rear baskets that are mesh or wire are most easily installed to your bike with cable ties by cutting through the mesh if you like. Many baskets will come with fittings for installing them or fixing them to your rack. But if they don’t, using cable ties is a very common method for securing things on your bike. Cable ties are very durable so they will last you quite some time!
