Double Butted

Double Butted spokes are a popular spoke type for road bikes for their reduced weight. Rather than being the same thickness of gauge through the length of the spoke, they reduce in the center. Adding up the weight of 70 or so spokes you will need for a wheelset, this reduced weight can be significant. Building with double butted spokes is popular for this reason.

If you are building a wheel it’s important to check what types of spokes will work with your hub. Generally this would be a Double butted or J bend, or it could be straight pull for a higher end hub.
